John Andreas Widstoe was born in Froyen, Norway January 31, 1872, and came to Utah at age 11. He graduated from Brigham Young College, then received a B.S. from Harvard in 1894. He received an appointment for a Harvard Travelling Fellowship and did advance study in Europe, receiving his A.M. and Ph.D. in 1899. In 1916, he accepted the presidency of the University of Utah.
